Where can I find impressive underrated college theatre programs?

Hey all, I'm quite passionate about theatre and I'm hoping to continue my involvement in it during my college years. I've been searching for colleges with stellar theatre programs, but I want to look beyond just the typical well-known ones. Do any of you know of some underrated college theatre programs that offer rich, high-quality experiences? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely, there are plenty of less famous but equally impressive theatre programs across the country that you might find interesting.

DePaul University in Chicago offers a renowned theatre program that's a bit off the typical path but nonetheless quite respected. Their Theatre School offers a BFA in several specific disciplines, including acting, costume design, lighting design, and stage management, among others. The program is known for its hands-on approach, giving students ample opportunities for practical experience through productions.

Elon University in North Carolina is another school with a strong but often overlooked theatre program. Elon’s Department of Performing Arts offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in drama and theatre studies. Their curriculum emphasizes practical experience, with students often having the opportunity to work on multiple productions each year.

Emerson College in Boston is a stellar choice for those interested in the performing arts. Known primarily for its strong communications programs, Emerson's theatre department often flies under the radar. It offers a highly collaborative environment, with students getting the chance to work on more than 20 student productions each year alongside the faculty-directed shows.

Ithaca College in New York offers a comprehensive theatre arts program across five main disciplines: acting, musical theatre, theatre production & design, theatre studies, and theatre arts management. The school is known for its immersive learning opportunities and strong alumni network in the field.

Last but not least, University of Utah's Department of Theatre is quite impressive. It offers robust training in both the artistry and the technical aspects of theatre, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of the field.

These programs are all excellent choices for anyone looking to pursue theatre in college but wanting to consider options beyond the usually mentioned programs. Just remember, the best theatre program for you should align with your specific interests, goals, and preferred style of learning, rather than just its reputation.
