Which states have the most 4-year colleges?

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the process of college hunting and am wondering if anyone knows which states have the most 4-year colleges. Any suggestions where I should focus my search?

When it comes to the states that are packed with many 4-year colleges, California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas come to mind.

- California is known for its wide range of 4-year institutions, outpacing all others in sheer numbers. Here you've got the University of California public system, the California State University system, and a host of private institutions like Stanford, USC, and the Claremont Colleges.

- New York is another state with a lot of 4-year colleges. In addition to the extensive SUNY and CUNY systems, it has a multitude of private institutions, like Columbia, NYU, and the colleges of the Finger Lakes region (Cornell, Colgate, Hamilton, etc.)

- Pennsylvania is remarkable with its large number of both public universities (like Penn State and the universities in the State System of Higher Education) and private ones (such as the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, and many liberal arts colleges).

- Texas is vast and varied, with numerous 4-year colleges spread across its large area. You will find the public University of Texas system, the Texas A&M system, and private colleges like Rice.

But don't just focus on these states because they have many colleges – instead, consider what you want from a college. What major do you want to study? Do you prefer a large school or a small school? Urban, suburban, or rural setting? Specific extracurriculars or sports? Answering these questions will help narrow your focus and find the best fit for you. Happy searching!
