In Search of the Most LGBT-friendly College

Hello, as a member of the LGBT community, finding a college that is inclusive and supportive is critical for me. Could anyone recommend a college that is known for being extremely LGBT-friendly? Details on why you think so would be incredibly helpful!

Here are three colleges often recognized as extremely LGBT-friendly, due to their policies, resources, and campus culture:

1. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): UCLA is often hailed as one of the most inclusive campuses out there. Its thriving LGBTQ Campus Resource Center provides educational programming, advocacy, and counseling services, to foster a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for all students. Students can also join multiple LGBT-related clubs and organizations on campus.

2. Harvard University: Not only does Harvard have a LGBTQ+ community on campus, but it also has the BGLTQ Office. This office helps students connect with other students, staff, faculty, and alumnae who share similar identities. They have a variety of programs, events, and discussion-based gatherings centered on life, politics, and experiences unique to the LGBTQ+ community.

3. The University of Washington (UW): It has the Q Center, a resource providing students with counseling, mentorships, study groups, and social events. It is also home to the University’s LGBTQ+ identified faculty and staff group, which provides students with an extensive network of support as they navigate their college experience.

Though these options are all large research universities, smaller colleges like Wesleyan University and Grinnell College also have active and thriving LGBT communities. Identifying the type of school environment you’re looking for (urban vs. rural, small vs. large, etc.) can also help you narrow down your search, as there are plenty of schools out there that are supportive of LGBTQ students, but their overall vibe can differ quite a bit.

Best of luck with your college search!
