Factors Influencing College Attendance

What factors are associated with a high school student's likelihood to attend college? I know that socioeconomic status can play a huge role, but are there any other major influences?

Absolutely, there are multiple factors at play. While socioeconomic status does play an important role, it's not the only influencing factor.

First, academic performance is crucial. Students who earn high grades, take rigorous coursework (like AP or IB classes), and score well on standardized tests (SAT or ACT) are more likely to pursue higher education. There's a correlation between a student's academic prowess and their likelihood to attend college.

Second, family and peer influence also matters. If a student comes from a family with a tradition of higher education or is surrounded by peers planning to attend college, they are more likely to follow suit.

Third, aspirational or career goals play a crucial part. Students who have clear-cut career paths that necessitate a college degree (like medical, engineering, or law fields, for example) are more likely to attend college.

Fourth, school resources and culture also heavily impact a student’s decision. For instance, schools with robust college counseling, high quality teaching, and a culture emphasizing the importance of higher education can significantly motivate students to attend college.

Lastly, geographic and demographic factors too shape the decision. Students in urban areas with greater access to colleges and students in states where higher education is more highly valued are more likely to attend college.

While it's hard to quantify the individual impact of each of these categories, they all collectively play a significant role in a student's likelihood to pursue tertiary education. Moreover, improving any of these variables can, in theory, increase the likelihood of a student attending a college or university.
