What makes a class 'difficult' in college?

Hey all, I've been hearing a lot about how some college classes can be super tough. But what exactly makes a class 'difficult'? Is it all about the course load, or are there other factors like the complexity of the material, the teacher style, etc. I'd just like to get a sense of what I might be in for a couple years from now. Thanks!

A good question! So, the concept of a class being 'difficult' in college can vary greatly depending on numerous factors.

One of the significant aspects may indeed be the workload. In some courses, especially those which are reading or writing intensive, the sheer volume of material to cover can be overwhelming in itself. Often these classes require students to independently read, analyze, and understand complex books, papers, or case studies which could make it challenging.

Next, you have the complexity of the material being taught. In certain classes (like many STEM subjects), the concepts introduced can be very abstract, intricate or mathematically complex, which can pose a challenge to students who are new to the field or struggle with abstract reasoning.

The way the professor teaches the course also plays a significant role. If a professor's teaching style does not match with a student's learning style, it may cause difficulties. For instance, some professors might not provide clear instructions or have expectations that are hard to meet. On the other hand, you might find a difficult class manageable if the professor makes the materials and expectations clear and provides ample support.

Lastly, difficulty can be subjective and differs from one student to another. A class might be considered tough for one student, but another student might find it easy because they have a strong background in the subject or are simply more interested in the material.

Remember also, many universities offer academic support services like tutoring, writing centers, and study groups that can be invaluable resources when tackling challenging courses. Make sure to take advantage of these if you need help! Don't forget, challenge often leads to growth, so don't shy away from difficult classes, especially if they are in a field you're passionate about or relevant for your career goals.
