Best College Classes?

Hey everyone, I'm planning my senior year classes and looking towards college. Just curious, what are some of the most valuable classes you took in college? Really trying to make the most out of it. Thanks so much!

From the perspective of someone knowledgeable about the college experience, it's great that you're thinking ahead to how your high school courses can prepare you for college. When it comes to what can be considered "valuable" classes in college, there's no one-size-fits-all answer because it largely depends on your individual interests, career ambitions, and academic needs.

Generally though, there are a few types of courses that many find valuable. Introductory courses in broad disciplines – History, Literature, Sociology, Psychology, or Economics, often afford students a broader understanding of the world, promote critical thinking and examination of varied perspectives.

Writing-intensive courses, regardless of the specific domain, can also be very beneficial because they enhance your writing and communication skills, which are crucial for most post-graduation paths.

In STEM fields, foundational classes in Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or Computer Science can provide you the practical knowledge and problem-solving skills applicable in many areas.

Audio or Visual Arts, Theater or Music courses often push students to think creatively, work collaboratively, and expand their cultural awareness. They also offer a great counterpoint to more academically focused courses.

Courses on Personal Finance or Entrepreneurship can be very helpful with preparing for life beyond college, educating students on budgeting, investment, and managing business pursuits.

Finally, language courses can be incredibly beneficial, not only for the skill of another language, but for the cultural insights they provide.

Remember that part of the beauty of college is the ability to explore a diversity of subjects before settling down into your major. As you create your freshman year schedule, look for a balance between foundational courses, subject-specific classes related to your intended major, and those classes outside your comfort zone that might surprise you.

Be sure to speak with your academic adviser when the time comes - they'll be key in helping you navigate course selection in terms of achieving both depth in your preferred field of study and breadth of interdisciplinary knowledge.
