Undergraduate Colleges Feeding into Med School

Hey, I'm looking to potentially med school after my undergrad. I was wondering, what undergraduate schools do most med school applications usually come from? Do pre-med programs have a significant impact? Thanks for any info.

Hello,

Great to see you're oriented towards a career in medicine! The Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) report each year provides data on which undergraduate schools send the most applicants to medical schools. While the exact institutions can vary a bit from year to year, often Ivy Leagues and larger state schools tend to send a higher number of applicants due to larger student bodies and comprehensive pre-med advising. For instance, colleges like Harvard, Cornell, UCLA, and Berkeley have ranked highly in recent years.

However, this doesn't mean attending these schools necessarily increases your med school chances. Medical schools don't favor certain undergrad colleges. They look at an applicant's individual credentials: rigorous coursework, GPA, MCAT scores, research, volunteering, clinical hours, and so forth. Your pre-med preparation, in whatever school you're in, matters a lot.

Yes, pre-med programs can substantially aid you. They’re designed to ensure you fulfill all the course requirements for medical school. They often offer resources like advising, MCAT prep, clinical exposure opportunities, etc.

Remember, the crucial thing is to perform well where you are and make the most of available resources. Feel free to ask more questions if you need clarification!
