Most In-Demand Instruments in Colleges

Hi there, I'm applying for college as a music major, but I'm not sure about the instrument to focus on. Are there particular instruments that are in high demand in college bands or orchestras?

There's definitely variation in demand depending on instrument and the specific program at a college. The less commonly played instruments often tend to be more in demand. If you're already adept at a more unusual instrument, such as the bassoon, viola, or french horn, you might find that you have an advantage in admissions for music programs as these instruments are not as commonly played, but are necessary in full orchestras.

In terms of band instruments, there is often a higher demand for low brass instruments like the tuba and trombone, as well as bass instruments like bass clarinet and bassoon. This is because they're less commonly played than instruments such as the flute or trumpet, but are necessary for a complete sound.

However, please don't choose your instrument based solely on demand. Your passion for your instrument and the music you make is more socially and emotionally rewarding in the long run. You should mainly focus on the instrument that you love to play and feel most competent at, as your level of dedication and skill will ultimately be far more noticeable than the type of instrument you play.

Remember, an incredibly well-played, common instrument can be more compelling to recruiters than a poorly-played, less common one. The most important thing is your musicianship, dedication, and craft, which can be conveyed regardless of the instrument you play.

You also must remember that different colleges and different music programs have different needs and demands when it comes to instruments. So, while one college may need more viola players, another may need more clarinet players. If there are particular programs you are interested in, reaching out directly to those departments might give you a better idea of what instruments they may be in need of.
