Common Fears Among High School Students - Real Talk

Being a high school student right now, I wanted to see if others experience the same fears as me. What are some of the most common fears high school students deal with these days? Am I the only one freaking out about college app and just general school stuff?

It's completely natural to experience fears and worry as a high school student, given the many changes, transitions, and new expectations you're handling. For many students, the process of college application is particularly stressful, being a complicated, high-stakes process that's unfamiliar to most students until they're in the middle of it!

College applications, along with related aspects like standardized tests, college essays, and the prospect of college rejections, are widely recognized as sources of anxiety. Many students also struggle with fears about academic performance and the uncertainty of what their life will look like after high school.

Social struggles and the quest to fit in are another cause for fear among many high school students. The stress of maintaining relationships, coping with peer pressure, and navigating the social structure of high school can be significant.

Further, career decision-making and the pressure of choosing a pathway for their future can be a common source of apprehension. Some students may feel anxious about choosing the "right" career, and the path they should take to reach their chosen career.

There's also the fear of failure. Whether it's not getting good grades, not getting into a dream college, or not living up to the expectations of parents or teachers, the fear of not doing well is pervasive among high school students.

Remember that it's okay to be nervous, and it's more common than you might think. Be sure to talk to someone about your fears, like a guidance counselor, teachers, parents, or friends. They can offer advice, perspective, or just a listening ear. Most importantly, remind yourself that it's okay not to have everything figured out at this stage and that learning, growing, and making mistakes are all part of the high school (and beyond) experience.
