What are the most common health issues among high school students?

Hey, I am just curious about what tends to be the most common health problems that high school students have to deal with? Are there ways to prevent or lower these issues that I should be aware of?

High school students face a range of health issues, both physical and mental, particularly given the significant growth, change, and increasing independence during these teenage years.

Common physical health issues include obesity or eating disorders, resulting from issues around body image or insufficient dietary education; vision problems, often exacerbated by excessive screen time; and sleep deprivation, given the pressures of academics, extracurriculars, social life, and often early school start times.

As for mental health, anxiety and depression are increasingly common, sometimes connected to academic or social pressures, or significant life changes. Substance abuse, whether alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, is another potential concern, often a response to peer pressure or an attempt to self-medicate for other issues.

To prevent or mitigate these health problems, a balanced lifestyle is essential. This includes a healthy diet, regular physical activity, sufficient rest, and time for relaxation and social interactions. Regular medical checks and vision tests are also important to establish a baseline for health and spot any emerging issues early.

Balancing academic pressures with stress relief techniques, such as mindfulness, yoga, or other hobbies, can be beneficial. It's also worth engaging in open conversations about the risks of substance abuse, and the importance of seeking help if feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or depression.

Lastly, remember that a critical part of health is seeking help when necessary. There is never any shame in reaching out to a trusted adult or healthcare professional if you're struggling with these or any other health issues.
