What profession requires the longest study period in college?

Hey folks! Curiosity got the best of me, and I was wondering - what jobs require the most years of study in college? I understand some professions require advanced degrees such as a master's or doctoral degree, but which ones take the longest? Anyone?

The study periods in higher education can indeed be long, depending on the career path a student wants to pursue.

One of the professions that require the longest study period is becoming a medical doctor. This generally requires four years of undergraduate study (often in a pre-med or similar program), four years of medical school, and then an additional three to seven years of residency, depending on the medical specialty chosen. In some cases, an additional fellowship period of 1 to 2 years may also be pursued for further specialization. Thus, becoming a practicing, fully licensed medical doctor could potentially require up to 10 to 17 years of higher education and training beyond high school.

However, a career path in academia or research can also add up to a significant number of years. For instance, a career as a university professor often requires four years of undergraduate study, anywhere from five to seven years for a Ph.D., and potentially additional time for postdoctoral research. This can take anywhere from 9 to 12 years or even longer, particularly within fields that have high competition for tenure-track positions.

Similarly, other professions such as law, veterinarian science, and pharmacy also entail considerable study periods. They typically involve three to four years of undergraduate study followed by three to four years of professional school. Depending on their field of specialization, additional years of residency, clerkship, or doctoral research may also be required.

On the other hand, careers in fields such as engineering, computer science, business, and many others can be started with just a bachelor's degree, which generally takes four years in the United States.

Remember, these timelines are estimates and can vary based on individual circumstances, the institution, or the country. Additionally, these timelines do not account for breaks between studies or part-time study, both of which would lengthen the time to completion.
