Retaining Knowledge Through College

Everyone always talks about 'use it or lose it' when it comes to information. And honestly, I'm a bit worried. What if I don't remember most of the stuff I learn in college? Like, is this a common concern, or is it just me overthinking?

Responding as a college admissions counselor,

Your concern is quite valid and is faced by many students while they transition from high school to college. The ability to retain and recall information is fundamental to any higher education. But remember, the focus of college education is often more on developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn and apply new knowledge, over merely memorizing facts.

From my experience, the small class sizes, interactive sessions, and immersive learning experiences in college generally help students absorb information better. Professors promote discussions, research, and practical applications that tend to lead to deeper learning and understanding that sticks with students long-term.

In addition, engaging in study groups, making use of office hours to clarify doubts, and consistent revision are some strategies that help reinforce learning. Taking advantage of academic resources and tutoring services on campus can also be beneficial.

Lastly, don't stress too much if you can't remember every detail from every single lecture. It's okay if you don't remember everything; the key takeaway should be the underlying concepts and skills that you can apply to different contexts throughout your life and career.

Make the most of your college experience. Try to really understand and get good at the subjects you're passionate about, and remember, a lifelong learning mindset will serve you even after college especially in today's ever-changing world.
