What are the most common teaching positions in high school?

Hey everyone, I'm considering going into education and I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me what are the most common teaching positions typically available in a high school setting, like which subjects usually have the most job openings. Thanks!

Several subject areas traditionally have a high demand for teachers in a high school setting. One of the most sought-after positions is often in Math. A large number of districts across the country consistently report difficulties in filling math positions. This could be attributed to the technical skills required for the role, as well as other career opportunities available to individuals with strong math backgrounds.

Nearly as common are Science teaching positions. Physics and Chemistry specifically are often in need. Similar to Math, the complex nature of these subjects and the competitive salary in private sector roles for those qualified to teach them can make filling these positions challenging for schools.

Special Education is also a field that often has vacancies. It requires unique expertise and profound patience to provide quality education to students with diverse needs, and schools often struggle to find qualified special education teachers.

Lastly, English as a Second Language (ESL) or language subjects like Spanish, French, and Mandarin often have a high number of openings. As our society becomes more globally oriented, the demand for language teachers is likely to continue to grow.

That being said, the demand for different subjects can widely vary based on specific locations, district needs, and demographic trends. If you're open to relocation or adaptable in your subject focus, you may find it easier to land a job. Keep a lookout for openings in your preferred locations and remember, student teaching and internships are great ways to get your foot in the door at a particular school or district.
