What are the most common courses taken in high school?

Hey everyone, I'm currently planning my classes for next year. I was just wondering what the most common high school courses are that students tend to take? I want to sort of understand the norms and maybe branch out a bit too.

Typically, high school students follow a curriculum designed to provide a well-rounded education while fulfilling colleges' expectations. The most common classes UK and US students usually take include:

1. English: You'll likely take English each year, focusing on literature analysis, reading comprehension, and writing composition. You might also cover certain literary genres, periods, or themes.

2. Math: High school math classes usually progress from Algebra 1 to Geometry, then Algebra 2, and finally, a student may take either Precalculus or Calculus, depending on their preparedness and their colleges' requirements.

3. Science: Students commonly take biology, chemistry, and physics. Depending on your school, you might have options for earth science, environmental science, or AP-level courses too.

4. Social Studies/History: This typically covers U.S. History, World History, Government, and Economics. Some schools may offer Geography, Psychology, or Sociology.

5. Foreign Language: Many colleges prefer students with at least two years of a foreign language. Spanish, French, and German are commonly offered, but your school might also offer languages like Latin, Japanese, or Mandarin.

6. PE/Health: Most schools require students to take at least one year of PE and Health.

7. Arts: Students usually have room for at least a few electives, and many opt to fulfill these credits with art courses such as music, drama, or visual arts.

8. Electives: Aside from core academic subjects and PE, schools usually offer a wide array of electives, such as Computer Science, Journalism, Business, or different Technology classes.

Remember that high school is also about exploring your interests and passions, so don't be afraid to step out of the typical path if a particular subject intrigues you! For instance, you might dive deeper into a subject area by taking an AP course, or you might explore new terrains with unique electives offered at your school. Nonetheless, it's also important to ensure you're meeting your high school's graduation requirements and the admission requirements of colleges you might be interested in.
