Impact of a university's NFL success on college applications and experience

I'm a high school junior trying to map out my colleges to apply to. A lot of the 'big name' colleges in my list have a history of sending a significant number of players to the NFL or have players who made it big in the NFL. I'm curious about how this aspect might influence the college experience there, especially course selection, campus life, and maybe student support. Is this something any of you have factored into your decision-making?

High-profile football programs do attract a lot of buzz and can contribute to a strong sense of school spirit and community. It's fun to be part of a campus culture where sports are a big deal and game days can be major campus-wide events featuring tailgates, pep rallies, and sometimes even parades.

In terms of academics, there might be more athletic-studies-type courses available, such as sports management or sports medicine. These can be appealing if you're interested in a career in sports, but they won't necessarily dominate the curriculum.

The presence of a successful football program shouldn't directly impact your access to academic support services. Universities with big athletics programs can have abundant resources, but their distribution to academics versus athletics can vary widely. However, those resources can potentially lead to greater alumni networking opportunities, especially if the school's NFL players stay engaged with their alma mater.

On the downside, a highly competitive football program can result in a culture where athletics overshadow academics. There can also be a degree of division or exclusivity related to the athletes themselves, who may function somewhat separately from the typical student body due to their training, class, and travel schedules.

In summary, while it can be thrilling to watch your college team compete on a national stage and this spirit can contribute to a unique college experience, the presence of a successful football program likely won't significantly impact your academic experience unless you're hoping to pursue a sports-related field. When selecting colleges, focus on factors such as academic programs, location, financial aid, and student life that will have a more direct influence on your college experience.
