What majors do most politicians have in college?

Kinda into politics and I've been seriously thinking about a career in public service after college. For those in the know, what majors do most politicians typically have in college? This might help me in choosing my major.

While there's a variety of college backgrounds in the political scene, many, if not most, politicians tend to come from fields such as political science, law, economics, history, and international relations. This isn't very surprising given that these fields directly cover subject matter relevant to government and public policy.

For example, political science gives you a foundational understanding of political systems, ideologies, and policies. Law, on the other hand, helps you understand statutes, legal precedents, and the workings of the judicial system – which forms a significant part of the policy-making process.

Economics can help you grasp the financial implications of policy decisions. A strong understanding of economic principles can be beneficial in making informed policy decisions that have a direct impact on the economy.

History offers insights into how past events shape current policies and politics. An understanding of history can also give you a broader perspective on how nations and their political systems evolve.

International relations focuses on how different countries interact with each other, which can be particularly useful if you're considering a career in diplomacy or international policy.

While these areas of study may be common, remember that your major doesn’t necessarily define your career path. There are certainly politicians with degrees in other fields like business, journalism, or even sciences. Choosing a major you're genuinely interested in is important so you stay motivated during your studies.

To gather deeper insights into this, you could look up the educational backgrounds of politicians you admire to see what they studied. This could provide some personal insights to inform your decision. All the best as you explore your interest in politics and public service!
