Why is college such a stressor?

I feel like everyone, including my parents, are really concerned about the whole college thing, and I'm getting worried too. Any ideas why college causes this anxiety in so many people? Is it as terrifying as it sounds?

There are a few reasons why college can feel like such a high-stress situation.

Firstly, for many students, applying to college is often the first significant life decision that they make, and it can feel daunting because it seemingly sets the trajectory for their future career and life. It involves numerous steps including researching schools, understanding their offerings, testing requirements (if applicable), strengthening extracurricular portfolios, writing essays, and more—all while maintaining your school GPA.

Secondly, the process itself can feel intense and competitive especially if you're aiming for selective schools. A lot of this pressure can come from external sources, such as friends or family, who may have high expectations.

Next, the cost of attending college can be a significant stressor for many students and their families. The paying for education process involves understanding tuition rates, fees, financial-aid packages, scholarships, and student loan terms, among others. Meanwhile, there are certain unknown factors in this process which can evoke stress, like not knowing whether you'll be accepted by your first-choice school, or whether you'll receive enough financial aid.

However, keep in mind that while college is a significant step, it is not the only determinant of your future. Many successful people attended a wide range of colleges, and some even didn't attend college at all. What matters most is what you make of your opportunities, your willingness to work hard, and your ability to persevere.

Moreover, there are plenty of resources available—from school guidance counselors to online forums like CollegeVine—that can help alleviate some of the stresses associated with the process. So while it's normal to be feeling worried, it's equally important not to get overwhelmed, and to remember that there is help and support available to you.
