Breakdown of pivotal high school classes?

So, we all know those core courses like Math, English, Science, and Social studies are pretty important in high school, right? But, I'm kinda curious, would it be accurate to say some courses hold more weight than others? For example, would taking AP Calculus be seen as more 'important' than say, creative writing? Would love to hear people's thoughts on this.

When colleges review your high school transcript, they generally pay attention to the rigor and diversity of the courses you've taken. That said, some courses may hold more 'weight', but not in the way you've framed it.

Taking AP Calculus might be more impactful if you're applying to a program in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), for example, because it demonstrates you've taken on a challenging math class relevant to your potential major. On the other hand, a humanities-focused program might appreciate seeing courses like creative writing because they indicate well-roundedness and specialized skills within that field.

Balancing both rigor and relevance to your career interests is likely the best approach. And remember, while course selection is important, maintaining a high GPA and showing an upward trend in your grades are significant.

Furthermore, all AP courses typically show your ability to handle complex material at the college level, regardless of the specific subject. But keep in mind that colleges are also looking for students who are passionate about their interests and have dug deep into their specialized fields.

Simply put, there's no one-size-fits-all in course selection. It depends on your academic and career goals. For instance, taking AP Calculus, while important, doesn't necessarily trump a class like creative writing if your goals align more with the latter. It's all about showing strategic alignment towards your future academic and career goals.
