While all four years of high school matter, colleges often pay the closest attention to grades from Junior year or 11th grade. There are a few reasons why this year tends to stand out in the admissions process.
Firstly, it is the last full academic year before you apply to college, so it's the most recent showcase of your academic capabilities. Secondly, this is typically the year when students are in the higher level or most rigorous courses, which colleges like to see. It's also often the year when students take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT.
However, that's not to say the other years don't matter. Freshman (9th grade) and Sophomore (10th grade) years provide a foundation and show your academic journey. Your growth and improvement over these years can be a strong positive in your application.
Senior-year grades (12th grade) can also factor in, especially for Regular Decision applicants. Even if you're admitted, colleges can and do rescind offers if senior-year grades drop significantly. That being said, do your best to maintain a consistent academic performance throughout all of high school.
Just remember, colleges look at grade trends too. They appreciate seeing improvement or consistent high performance over time. They're more forgiving of a lower grade in ninth grade followed by steady improvement, as it shows resilience and hard work.
