College Decision Influences: What Were Yours?

Hey guys! I'm a high school junior in the throes of the college application process and I've been thinking a lot about what's going to influence my ultimate decision. What was the thing that most influenced your choice to apply where you did? Was it the programs offered, location, reputation, financial considerations, or something entirely different?

For some students, the decision is heavily influenced by the academic programs offered by the university. If you have a clearly defined interest or field you want to pursue, it's generally crucial to apply to colleges that are known for their excellence in that particular area. For instance, if you have a keen interest in engineering, colleges like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Georgia Tech might catch your attention because of their renowned engineering programs.

Some students might prioritize location in their decisions. If you're someone who loves the hustle and bustle of city life, colleges located in urban environments like New York University or Boston University could be more appealing. On the flip side, if a quieter, more serene environment appeals to you, colleges in smaller towns or rural areas could be your top choice.

The financial side of things is indeed another key aspect, and cannot be overlooked. For certain students, financial aid packages, scholarships, and the overall cost of attendance are major factors in their choice of school. Some students may choose a more affordable in-state school over a more expensive out-of-state or private institution, or vice versa.

Then there is the factor of reputation and ranking of the university. This can be a significant influence on some students, especially if they're considering specific competitive fields or graduate programs.

Lastly, the size of the school and the array of extracurricular opportunities can also weigh heavily on some students' decisions. If you're someone who thrives in smaller, more intimate environments, a large university with tens of thousands of students may not be your top pick. Conversely, if you love having a wide array of clubs, sports, and activities, a smaller college might feel limiting.

Every student is unique and will make their college decision based on what is most important to them. It could be one of the factors mentioned above, a combination of them, or something else entirely.
