Is it common to exaggerate high school stats?

I've seen some really incredible (almost unbelievable) high school stats floating around. Do people generally inflate these? Do colleges know how to spot embellishments?

In the college admissions process, honesty is certainly the best policy. Although there might be a few individuals who try to exaggerate their stats, most students are truthful. Admissions committees have years of experience reviewing applications and have a general sense of what is typical for high school achievements in a given context.

As a rule of thumb, everything you report should be able to be backed up by evidence or references. Be aware that colleges often verify information on students' applications. If a student is found to have lied or exaggerated on their application, the consequences can be severe. They could even be rescinded from a college they've been accepted to, or expelled if the dishonesty is discovered after they've matriculated.

It's natural to feel pressure or even apprehension when you see others with seemingly impressive stats. Many students experience impostor syndrome, doubting their accomplishments and fearing they're not as capable as others. However, remember that every individual is unique and everyone's path is different. You can only control your own achievements and efforts. Comparing your journey with others' may not be the healthiest approach.

Focus instead on presenting yourself honestly, highlighting your strengths and accomplishments, and acknowledging areas for growth. Remember, colleges are interested not only in your achievements, but also your character, sense of ethics, and potential to contribute positively to their campus community.
