Understanding PSAT Percentiles

Hey everyone, I'm just trying to wrap my head around PSAT percentiles. How exactly do they work, and how important are they in the grand scheme of college admissions? Is there a significant difference admissions officers see between, say, the 90th and 95th percentile?

Hello there! Percentiles are basically a way of comparing your score to those of other students who took the PSAT. For instance, being in the 90th percentile means you scored higher than 90% of test-takers. When it comes to college admissions, PSAT scores themselves aren't usually part of the application. They're more for your own benefit, to gauge where you stand before taking the SAT, and they can qualify you for National Merit scholarships if you're in the very top percentiles. In the larger view of college admissions, your SAT or ACT scores will be much more significant.

As for the difference between 90th and 95th percentiles, it could be meaningful in terms of National Merit considerations, as cutoffs for scholarships can be competitive and vary by state. But otherwise, colleges typically won't see your PSAT scores, so focus more on how your PSAT performance can inform your preparation for the actual SAT or ACT. Keep up the good work!
