Getting into top public high schools?

I've been doing some research on the most selective public high schools, to guide my decisions. Does anyone have a list or know where I could find one? And what are some things these schools look for in a potential student?

There isn't one definitive list of the most selective public high schools, mainly because criteria for selection and the type of specialized programs offered can vary from state to state. However, you could look to rankings done by organizations like U.S. News and World Reports or Great Schools for broad overviews of top-performing public high schools.

As for your second question, admission to selective public high schools typically requires an application process that may include elements such as a student application form, portfolio of work, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and an interview.

Some schools look for not just academic achievement, but also indications of the student's passion for learning and their specific area of interest. For instance, academic achievement doesn't just include grades, but also involvement in extracurricular activities and academic competitions. A passion for science, for example, could be indicated through participation in science fairs or a potential interest in the performing arts could be indicated through involvement in community theater.

Letters of recommendation, typically from teachers or counselors, give insight into a student's character, commitment, and potential. Some schools may also require an interview to further assess the student's fit with the school's values and culture.

Do keep in mind that each school may have different criteria and thus what works for one school may not necessarily work for another. It's best to research the specific requirements of each school.
