What are currently the most controversial topics in high schools?

Hello there, friends! I'm doing a bit of an informal research project on the current climate of our high schools. Out of curiosity, which topics in high schools would you say spark the most controversy today?

Responding to such a broad question with specifics can be challenging by nature. However, based on interactions in various academic circles, three key topic areas tend to generate significant discourse, particularly in American high schools.

1. Digital Learning: With the pandemic instigating widespread use of online learning, arguments have emerged over its effectiveness. Some argue it provides flexibility and safety; others contend it exacerbates inequities, harms mental health, and impedes the academic progress of some students.

2. School Funding: Inequities in public school funding are a matter of ongoing debate. More affluent districts can have significantly better resources than poorer ones, raising questions about fairness and equal opportunity for all students.

3. Diversity and Inclusion: Post Black Lives Matter, many schools are grappling with how to create more diverse and inclusive environments. Topics like school curricula reflecting diverse ethnic groups, LGBTQA+ issues are hotly debated, with disputes over how these subjects can best be approached to recognize and celebrate difference while also ensuring all students feel safe and respected.

Each educational community will likely have its own unique controversies. It can therefore be helpful to gather a broader perspective from various school communities to truly understand the most controversial topics currently present in high schools.
