Most popular youth and high school sports per state?

Being an athletic-oriented student, I’m intrigued to know about the most popular high school and youth sports in each state. Anyone have any data or anecdotal evidence to share?

I'd like to preface that popularity can be measured in a few ways, like the number of participants or spectators for example. However, since you're asking about youth and high school sports, I'll focus on participant numbers.

Nationwide, the most popular high school sports in terms of participation have consistently been football for boys and volleyball or track and field for girls. But let's look at a few specific states:

1. California: Due to its large population and diverse range of climates, California sees popularity in a variety of sports. Football nevertheless has the highest participation numbers for boys, while track and field is quite popular among girls.

2. Texas: Known as a football state, Texas not surprisingly has football as its most popular boys' sport. For girls, it's volleyball and track and field.

3. New York: Soccer and baseball take the lead for boys in the Empire State, with track and field for girls. Lacrosse is also increasingly popular in this state.

4. Florida: With its warm weather, football and outdoor track are leading boys' sports in Florida. For girls, track and field, followed closely by volleyball, tend to draw the most participants.

5. Illinois: Again football is the leader among boys. Basketball, however, also has a strong presence. For girls, volleyball and track and field are quite popular.

These are all rough characterizations, and every state will have outliers and exceptions at different schools. Also keep in mind, the most popular sports can vary drastically when you go down to the city or community level. Furthermore, the numbers can change over time due to various factors such as demographic shifts, changes in school funding, and developing interests in new sports. Finally, eSports is a rapidly growing field, and in some areas may soon surpass traditional sports in terms of participation.
