Getting college application fee waivers

With all the colleges I want to apply to, the application fees are starting to add up. Does anyone know any strategies for obtaining application fee waivers?

Yes, there are a few strategies for obtaining college application fee waivers.

Firstly, if you were able to get an SAT or ACT fee waiver, you'll automatically be eligible for college application fee waivers. The College Board, for instance, provides four application fee waivers for students who took the SAT or SAT Subject Tests with a fee waiver.

Another option is to apply for a fee waiver directly through the Common Application or Coalition Application. When you fill out your profile, there will be a section where you can indicate that you qualify for a fee waiver, and you'll need to select the reason why (such as being eligible for the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program, being enrolled in a TRIO program, or other income-based criteria). The colleges you're applying to will then decide whether to grant you the waiver.

You can also reach out directly to the admissions office of the colleges you're intending to apply to and explain your financial situation. Some colleges, particularly smaller or private colleges, may be willing to provide a fee waiver code.

Lastly, consider college fairs or visiting campuses. Representatives sometimes provide fee waivers to encourage applications from students who've shown interest by such initiatives. They can also guide you on how best to request a waiver.

Do keep in mind that not all colleges grant application fee waivers and the criteria may vary. It's always best to check with each college about their specific policy.
