Which high school grades matter the most for college admissions?

As a junior about to step into my senior year, I've been feeling pretty stressed about my college applications. I keep wondering, which grades from high school hold the most weight in college admissions? Do they focus more on the junior year, or is it an even blend of all four years? Thanks in advance for any help!

While the answer can depend somewhat on the college in question, generally speaking, all four years of high school grades are important for college admissions. However, there are some nuances worth noting.

The junior year is often seen as extremely crucial since it's the last complete year of high school on your transcript when applying to most colleges. Essentially, your junior year grades are the most recent snapshot colleges have of your academic performance before making their decision.

On the other hand, freshman year is often viewed as a transitionary period as students adjust to the rigor and expectations of high school. Some colleges, such as the University of California system, don't formally consider freshman year grades, but they can still inform the trajectory of your high school career.

Finally, don't discount the importance of your sophomore year grades. They can demonstrate growth from freshman year, particularly if you took more challenging courses or improved your grades.

In sum, while all four years matter, there tends to be a greater emphasis placed on your junior year and the first part of your senior year, as these grades are the most indicative of the student you'll be when you enter college.
