College Interview Questions: Admired Individual

Hey folks! I've been prepping for my college interviews and I stumbled upon the question 'Whom do you most admire?' I feel a bit stuck... Any suggestions on what kind of person - like a celebrity, family member, or someone from history - would make a good answer? How personal should I get with this?

The question of whom you most admire can be a really great opportunity to showcase your values, your passions, and your personality during a college interview. The person you admire can range from a historical figure, a family member, a mentor, a teacher, or even a contemporary figure in your field of interest. The ‘whom’ isn’t as important as the 'why.'

When it comes to making your choice, here are a few points:

1. Authenticity− The person you choose should reflect your true feelings. If the person you genuinely admire is a family member, don’t feel you need to pick a well-known person just for the sake of it.

2. Connection− Your choice should ideally align with your interests, goals, or values. If you’re passionate about social justice, for instance, you might admire a civil rights activist. If you’re interested in the sciences, perhaps there's a trailblazing scientist you admire.

3. Explanation− Be prepared to explain why you admire this person. Your reasons tell more about your principles and priorities than about the person you admire.

Personal stories can be effective if you're comfortable sharing and if they shed light on your character or experiences. It’s okay if the person is someone close to you. But remember, the focus of the response is less on that person and more on why you respect them, what qualities you admire, and how those aspects have shaped your own ambitions or conduct.

For example, if you admire your grandmother because of her unwavering resilience in the face of adversity, her commitment to her community, and her never-ending positivity, these might be traits you strive to embody in your life. It gives insight into what you value and how you might approach challenges in college and beyond.
