What determines which high schools send the most students to MIT?

Hey all, I've been curious about something lately... Is there some kind of factor (like high SAT scores, high AP scores, competitive science clubs, etc.) that certain high schools possess which make them send more of their graduates to MIT? Thanks for any insight!

While there are multiple factors that might contribute to why certain high schools send more students to MIT, the primary reasons usually stem from the academic culture and resources available at the school.

High schools that continuously send their graduates to MIT often emphasize a rigorous curriculum, where students are encouraged to enroll in advanced math and science courses, such as AP Calculus, Physics, or Computer Science. This helps students to build a solid academic profile. After all, colleges like MIT do consider course rigor during admissions.

In these schools, there also tend to be strong science and technology-based extracurriculars such as robotics clubs, mathletes, science olympiad teams, coding clubs, etc. Participation in these activities can help students develop and demonstrate the passion and aptitude for math and science that MIT values. Many students from these schools may achieve at a high-level (think 'Tiers 1 & 2' level) in these activities such as winning state, national or even international accolades, which are often seen positively by MIT and other similar institutions.

Schools that regularly send students to Ivy league colleges or other top-tier schools often have a robust college counseling program which can provide students with the support they need during the application process. This ranges from helping with essays to discussing school choices and aiding in interview preparation.

Location also plays a minor role as some regions might have more students applying to MIT due to regional preferences or awareness.

In essence, there's no single, definitive factor that will ensure a high school sends more students to MIT. However, access to challenging coursework, involvement in related extracurricular activities, and comprehensive college counselling can enhance a student's chances of being admitted to MIT.

It's also important to stress that students from all types of high schools can and do get admitted to MIT. So, if your high school may not have these resources, do not be disheartened and continue focusing on strengthening your individual application.
