Which maths class is crucial for high school?

I'm not a huge fan of maths, but I know it's important. In terms of preparing for college and potential careers, which particular math class do you think the average high school students should pay the most attention to and why?

The importance of a certain math class can depend a lot on the individual student, their interests, and their potential career path. However, an Algebra course, typically Algebra II, is often referred to as the "gatekeeper" subject in many high school curricula. Algebra, including topics like equations, inequalities, and functions, forms the backbone of many more advanced mathematical concepts and applications. Not only do you need it to move onto higher-level math classes like Trigonometry and Calculus, but it also serves a critical role in a range of fields, from engineering and computer science, to economics and social sciences.

Geometry is another important class as it's often the first time students encounter proofs and more abstract ways of thinking. This can be a vital skill for developing logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

If you're interested in a career in sciences, engineering, or technology, classes like Precalculus and Calculus may be crucial as many college and university programs in these fields require a strong understanding of these areas of math.

It's also worth considering that most colleges require the completion of at least 3 years of maths, including Algebra and Geometry, for admission, but many selective schools prefer to see 4 years of maths including classes at the Calculus or Statistics level.
