Demonstrating Interest to Colleges

Hey, I'm a bit stressed about this whole college application process (Who isn't, right?). So, can anyone explain to me how exactly colleges know if you're genuinely interested in them? Do they track the number of visits to their website or something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I understand how you feel; applying to college can certainly be an anxiety-provoking process. Demonstrated interest can be a factor in college admissions, although it varies from school to school. Some colleges track demonstrated interest, while others don't consider it at all.

Here's a rundown of how you can typically demonstrate interest:

1. College Visits: Either in person or virtually, attending tours and information sessions can show that you're interested. Make sure to sign up through the official channels so your visit is recorded.

2. College Fairs and High School Visits: If a college visits your high school or participates in a college fair in your area, taking the time to speak with a representative and filling out a contact card can demonstrate interest.

3. Application: Applying under an Early Decision or Early Action plan can show a school that it's a top choice for you. Remember, though, that early decision is binding and may not be the best choice if you're unsure or need to compare financial aid offers.

4. Communication: This could be through email or a phone call to the admissions office with thoughtful, well-researched questions. It’s critical, however, not to send emails or make calls that can easily be answered by looking at the college's website.

5. Interviews: If a school offers an optional interview, take advantage of this opportunity. This shows a willingness to take extra steps to learn about the university.

6. “Why This College” Essays: If a school asks you to write an essay about why you're interested in attending, this is a fantastic opportunity to show your interest. Make sure to personalize your response and show knowledge of and enthusiasm for specific aspects of the college.

Remember, however, not all colleges consider demonstrated interest, including a good number of highly selective colleges. So while it's helpful to demonstrate interest where you can, it's also crucial to focus on tangible aspects of your application, like your essays, GPA, test scores (if applicable), and extracurricular activities. Good luck!
