What are some exceptional colleges in North Carolina?

Hello all, I'm a high school junior from North Carolina considering staying in-state for college. Of course, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke come to mind, but what other colleges are worth considering here? Open to all sorts: public, private, small, large. Thanks for your insight!

North Carolina truly has a wealth of higher education institutions. In addition to well-known universities such as UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, there are other colleges that are worth considering based on your preferences for size, type, location, and areas of study.

1. North Carolina State University (NC State): Located in Raleigh, NC State is a public institution known for being a leader in areas like engineering, veterinary medicine, and agriculture. With over 34,000 undergraduates, it's pretty large and is part of the Research Triangle along with UNC and Duke.

2. Wake Forest University: This mid-sized private institution is located in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest is known for its strong undergraduate teaching and has highly ranked programs in areas such as business and pre-med.

3. Davidson College: Located near Charlotte, Davidson is a highly sought after liberal arts college known for its challenging academic programs and its honor code. With its small size (around 2,000 undergraduates), students can really enjoy personalized attention from faculty.

4. Appalachian State University: Located in Boone, this public university has programs in fields including business, visual and performing arts, and sustainable development. The surrounding area is beautiful, and outdoor activities like hiking are popular.

5. University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW): If you're interested in marine biology, film studies, or business, UNCW is worth a look. This public university is located in the coastal city of Wilmington which provides a unique setting.

Researching each institution and visiting the campuses, if possible, will give you a deeper understanding of what each college can offer and if it might be a good fit for you.
