What should I expect from the UNC application?

Hey y'all, I've set my sights on giving UNC a shot. For those who have applied, can you share your application experiences? Is anything particularly challenging or unexpected about the application process?

Sure, happy to help out. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or UNC, uses The Common Application platform for undergraduate admission applications.

UNC asks applicants to complete two short-answer prompts in addition to their personal statement. Be prepared to write about why you're choosing your intended major, and an experience or someone that inspired that choice. Remember to tailor these responses to UNC specifically -- explaining how the major at UNC aligns with your interests or future goals will make your application more compelling.

In terms of academics, UNC looks for students who have challenged themselves with a rigorous curriculum in high school. Strong performance in AP, IB, and Honors classes can distinguish you in the admissions process. Keep in mind, though, that extracurricular engagement is also important. UNC tends to value students who show leadership and long-term commitment to a few activities over those who have a long list of shallow involvements.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is still maintaining its test-optional policy for the 2025 application cycle. You can decide whether to submit your SAT or ACT scores, depending on if you feel they accurately represent your academic ability.

As far as letters of recommendation go, UNC requires one from a school counselor and it’s recommended but not required to submit one additional teacher recommendation. Make sure your recommender can speak to your personal and academic strengths effectively.

Remember, UNC values diversity and inclusivity so make sure your responses underscore your unique experiences, perspectives, and values. Try to avoid generic responses as admissions officers want to hear your authentic voice and unique story.

Just as a parting note, UNC's admissions process is holistic which means they consider all the pieces of your application when making a decision. So, every element, from your grades and test scores to your essays and letters of recommendation, works together to paint a comprehensive picture of who you are as a prospective student. Good luck with your application!
