Decoding the New SAT

Hey guys, I've been hearing a lot of buzz about changes to the SAT. Can anyone break down what these changes are and how they might impact my application process?

Hi there! You're correct - there have indeed been significant changes to the SAT recently. As of spring 2024, the SAT is fully digital. Let's unpack what the new structure looks like:

1. Reading and Writing: There are two 32-minute modules, in which you'll need to complete a total of 54 questions. This gives you about 71 seconds per question.

2. Math: Like the Reading and Writing section, Math now comprises two 35-minute modules, with a total of 44 questions to solve. You'll have about 96 seconds per question or a tad over a minute and a half.

This makes the total duration of the digital SAT 134 minutes, during which you'll have to complete 98 questions. Please note that the SAT now does not have a no-calculator section, meaning you're allowed to use your calculator for both Math modules.

How might this impact your application process? In certain respects, the changes might make the test more user-friendly because you can flag and revisit questions more easily in the digital format as compared to the paper version. However, it's important to prepare for the test in a similar format - ideally, taking practice tests digitally. Ideally, you should get comfortable with time management and the structures of the new test.

Also, it's always good to remember that while the SAT is an essential part of most college applications, it is not the defining part. Colleges typically take a holistic approach towards applications, meaning they also put a lot of emphasis on your GPA, your high school coursework, your essays, and, if you have them, your letters of recommendation. They also weigh heavily on your extracurricular activities -– any sports, clubs, jobs, or community service you've been a part of your high school career - and will take into account your demonstrated leadership, commitment, and the impact you've made in these areas. Plan and balance your time wisely to improve not only your standardized test scores but also these other components!
