Examples of Impressive Extracurriculars

As the application season is approaching, I want to stand out among other applicants. So, I'm reaching out to ask what extracurricular activities you consider impressive or unique. Any examples or thoughts?

Colleges are always looking for students who stand out, who have a demonstrated passion and excellence in their pursuits. The types of extracurricular activities that can best highlight this level of interest and commitment usually fall into 4 Tiers.

Tier 1 activities are highly prestigious and unique. These demonstrate exceptional achievements or leadership capabilities at a national or international level. Examples could include achieving national recognition such as winning an Intel Science Fair award, achieving a top ranking in your chosen sport at a national level, or being a nationally recognized artist or performer.

Next comes the Tier 2 activities showing leadership and achievement but are more common. High leadership roles such as student body president, being selected for a state orchestra, or attaining high rankings in state-level sports can fall under this category.

Tier 3 activities demonstrate notable involvement and interest, but they aren't as distinguished as Tier 1 and 2 ones. Holding a significant leadership position in a club or being the captain of a sports team at your school are good examples.

Finally, Tier 4 activities include general membership in clubs or sports teams and volunteer work. While not as prestigious, these are still important to show your passions and engagement in your community.

To stand out, you should aim to have a mix of these, but particularly try to engage in something where you can show deep involvement and passion. For example, if you have an interest in health, you might try to volunteer at a local clinic, start a health awareness club at your school, and aim to take part in a national science fair with a project related to health.

Remember, the critical part is showcasing your passion, commitment, and leadership skills. So pick activities you genuinely enjoy and can pursue wholeheartedly.
