Getting into CMU CS Without CS Extracurriculars?

I've always been interested in Computer Science and would love to pursue it in Carnegie Mellon. However, I don't have many CS-related extracurriculars. Does anyone have any advice or know of students who have been admitted without a lot of CS experience? Or should I start hustling on some coding projects ASAP?

Getting into Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) Computer Science program is competitive and having computer science-related extracurriculars can indeed give you an advantage. However, remember that your entire application matters, not just what angle you have chosen to deepen your interest.

Admissions officers consider your grades, coursework, test scores, and essays, in addition to your extracurricular activities. While having CS extracurriculars may strengthen your application, they are not the sole determinant of whether you’ll be admitted. It's about showcasing passion and competence in a field. So if your non-CS extracurriculars show you have transferable skills and a tenacious attitude, this could be impressive in its own way too.

For example, being in a leadership position in an organization or club shows initiative, responsibility, and effective interpersonal skills. These traits are useful in any field, including CS. On the other hand, involvement in rigorous academic clubs like Math Olympiad or Science Olympiad demonstrates your problem-solving skills, which are crucial in computer science.

However, if you're interested in computer science, it makes sense to try to pick up a project or two if possible. Coding projects allow you to learn practical skills that you will use extensively in your CS classes. They may also confirm whether or not this is the field you want to invest your time in. You don't have to start a massive project - small projects can also show your interest and initiative.

It's also essential to articulate your passion for CS in your application, especially in your essays. These written components of your application give you the chance to explain why you are interested in CS and how you see yourself contributing to the field. A passion for the subject can make up for a lack of formal experience in the field.

Keep in mind that CMU also highly values the rigor of your academic schedule, having a highly competitive GPA, and strong test scores, along with your demonstrated interest and intellectual curiosity.

The path to CMU CS is not a straightforward one, and there isn't just one type of successful applicant. Draw on your strengths and unique experiences to make your application stand out.
