Choosing the Right Calculator for DSAT?

Hey folks, I'm about to start prepping for the DSAT and was wondering which calculator might be the best for this particular test? Any specialized features I should look for that can facilitate problem solving during the exam?

Choosing a calculator for the DSAT can be a bit overwhelming given the numerous options available. However, the key to remember is that a calculator should act as a tool to enhance your solving speed rather than becoming a crutch that you can't solve without. However, as you asked specifically for calculator suggestions for the DSAT, here are a few guidelines:

Since 2024, when the SAT went fully digital, you've been able to use an online calculator during the exam, specifically, the Desmos four-function calculator for the first section and the Desmos scientific calculator for the second section. While Desmos is an online graphing utility, both calculators will not have graphing features.

Before the exam, you should familiarize yourself with these online calculators. Practice navigating between different features and using functions like trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, exponent functions, etc., as it can save you a lot of time during the exam. Remember, you do not get more time to learn the calculator during the test.

If you want to practice with a physical calculator, any scientific calculator should suffice. If you want to invest in a graphing calculator for coursework or other standardized tests, calculators like the TI-84 Plus or the Casio fx-9750GII can be beneficial because of their advanced functionalities.

However, do keep in mind that more important than the calculator itself, is your understanding and knowledge of problem-solving. A top-tier calculator cannot replace a good understanding of the foundational math concepts. Understanding concepts is what will truly help facilitate problem-solving on the DSAT. Good luck with your preparations!
