The Biggest Universities in the U.S -- not just in terms of student population?

Hello everyone! I'm starting my college search and one thing that hasn't been clear to me is what constitutes a 'large' university. I understand looking at student population is one factor, but are there any other aspects that typically contribute to a school being considered large? Additionally, does anyone know some of the largest schools in the US in these terms? Thanks!

Hello! A 'large' university varies depending on what specific characteristics you're considering. Here are a few factors that generally contribute to the perception of a university being 'large':

1. Student Population: Naturally, the number of students is a direct measure of physical size. Schools with 20,000 or more students are typically classified as large universities.

2. Campus Size: The physical size of the university's campus can also play a factor. Some universities, like Berry College in Georgia are known for having expansive campuses.

3. Number of Offered Majors/Programs: Large universities often carry a comprehensive range of academic programs and majors. These institutions are likely to have numerous specialist schools, like a School of Business, School of Engineering, and so on.

4. Research Activity: Some also classify universities as 'large' based on their research activity. For instance, R1 universities (a Carnegie Classification) are considered to be the most research-intensive institutions.

Considering all these factors, some of the largest universities in the U.S. are:

- The University of Central Florida is often considered the largest university by enrollment, with more than 66,000 students.

- Texas A&M University sprawls over 5,500 acres, making it one of the largest campuses in America. It's also an R1 institute, indicating high research activity.

- Arizona State University offers over 350 majors to undergraduate students, which is quite a vast number.

- The University of Michigan is another school with high research activity, large enrollment, and a wide variety of academic programs.

Remember to consider what you're looking for in a school while comparing size. Do you want a school with vast resources, a bustling social scene, and varied academic offerings? Or do you prefer smaller class sizes and a more close-knit community? It's important to think about your personal education and campus life preferences. Good luck with your search!
