Ideal Time to Take the SAT?

Hi everyone! I'm a current sophomore and I'm starting to plan out my junior year schedule. I was wondering, when is the best time to take my first SAT? Is there a 'typical' time that most students take it? Any advice?

Hello! Most students typically take their first SAT in the spring of their junior year. This gives you enough time to adequately prepare while balancing your regular academic and extracurricular commitments. It also allows you to retake the test during the fall of your senior year if you're unsatisfied with your initial scores or if your target colleges have higher ranges than your first test results.

Keep in mind that the SAT has several test dates throughout the year. You could plan your preparation around these official test dates - March, May, and June are commonly chosen months during the junior year.

It's also a good idea to consider your course load when determining an ideal time to take the SAT. If you're expecting to be especially busy in the spring with AP exams or other responsibilities, it might be beneficial to aim for an earlier test date.

Alongside your studying, use resources like the Bluebook™ app to familiarize yourself with the digital SAT. Remember, as of spring 2024, the SAT is fully digital with two 32-minute modules for Reading and Writing, and two 35-minute modules for Math.

Preparation is key, so make sure you give yourself adequate time to review the test material and practice. A well-planned study regimen can be the difference-maker in achieving your target score. Best of luck with your planning!
