I've been really invested in football throughout high school and have been thinking about potentially getting into coaching. I'm especially intrigued by those who have reached high levels, like the most winning college football coaches. Realistically, how feasible is it to pursue coaching football at a college level right after college? What kind of pathway should I be looking at?

Starting a college football coaching career right after college may be a bit of a challenge, but it's not impossible. Usually, individuals who want to coach at a college level have significant experience in playing the sport, ideally at a college level or higher.

The majority of college coaches start their career by coaching at high school or by becoming graduate assistants at the college level. Being a graduate assistant allows you to learn from experienced coaches while also pursuing your postgraduate studies. This can be a beneficial pathway, as it allows you to network and gain practical coaching experience.

Next, you'd want to work your way up. Of course, this can take time; becoming a head coach doesn't happen overnight. It would likely involve moving through various assistant and coordinator roles. All the while, immersing yourself in the coaching community, attending coaching clinics, and learning from mentors could be advantageous.

In terms of education, while a specific degree is not always required in coaching, majoring in a related field like Sport Science, Physical Education or even Sports Management could equip you with valuable knowledge and skills. Alternatively, some coaches also have a background in Education.

Remember, coaching collegiate football is rewarding but can also require long hours, including weekends and holidays. It often involves travel for games and college recruitment, so be prepared for a commitment.
