How to Showcase Academic Competitions and Awards?

I'm pretty involved in academic competitions and have won few awards too. I'm a little bit confused about how best to reflect these in my applications. Is there any specific way to list them that colleges prefer?

Yes, there is certainly a way to present your academic competitions and awards effectively in your application. When listing these achievements on your application, it’s best to be as specific as possible about each award and competition.

Under the 'Awards and Honors' section of your application, start by simply listing the name of the award, followed by a brief (but clear) description of what it is and why you received it. For example, if you won a regional math competition, you might list "First Place, XYZ Regional High School Math Competition."

Don't forget to mention the level of the award (school, state, national, or international). If the award or competition is not well-known, think about adding a line or two describing it. This can help the admissions committee gauge the competition's significance and understand the effort you put in to earn the award. Also, ensure to state whether you participated individually or as a part of a group. If it was a group effort, mention your specific role in the team.

Remember to include the most prestigious or significant ones starting from the top. That is, the awards that required the most work or are the most prestigious should go at the top, and those less so should follow.

However, when you pen down your personal statement or essays, instead of just mentioning that you won an award, focus on what you learned from the experience, or how it affected your perspective on a topic. Reflect on how these experiences have shaped you and communicate the 'growth' element effectively.

While the Awards section of your application gives you the opportunity to list your achievements, the activities list and supplemental essays give you the chance to share the story behind these achievements, demonstrating your passion and commitment toward the activities you focused on.

Remember, it’s equally as important to convey the significance of your accomplishments as it is to simply list them. Balancing between the two ensures admissions officers can fully grasp the depth and breadth of your achievements.
