Taking the SAT: Best time?

I've been getting mixed advice on when I should take the SAT for the first time. Can anyone provide some insight on the best time to take it?

As a rule of thumb, it's generally a good idea to take the SAT for the first time during your junior year in high school. Most students choose to sit for the test initially in the spring of their junior year, around March or May. This schedule allows you enough time to familiarize yourself with the exam format and content, take advantage of preparation materials, and build on the knowledge you've gained through your high school courses.

Taking the SAT spring of junior year offers other benefits as well. Firstly, it provides ample time for you to retake the exam if you're not satisfied with your initial score. Remember that many students take the SAT more than once to improve their scores! So banking on multiple attempts can lead to better performance overall.

Secondly, getting your SAT out of the way before senior year begins allows you to dedicate more time and focus to other aspects of college applications, like crafting your essays or exploring potential colleges.

However, the best time to take the SAT depends on your individual circumstances and preparation level. For instance, you might consider taking the test earlier if you're already feeling confident in your abilities, or if you have a particularly busy schedule later in your high school career.

As the SAT went fully digital in 2024, remember that you can now make use of the Bluebook™ app to get a sense of the digital format and take a full-length practice test.

Remember, whatever timeline you choose, the key is to ensure you've allowed ample time for quality preparation before test day. This includes understanding and getting comfortable with the test format, honing your test-taking strategies, and reinforcing your grasp of the content tested. Overall, choose the schedule that works best for you and gives you the highest level of confidence as you approach the exam.
