Hey all, I'm trying to figure out the AP scoring scale. Can anyone help me understand what percent correct corresponds to a score of 5 on the AP Calc AB exam? Thanks!
AP Calculus AB scores are determined based on a composite score which factors in both the multiple-choice and free-response sections. While the College Board doesn’t publicly reveal the exact percentage needed for each score, we do have some estimates.
Usually, a composite score of around 70-108 out of 108 possible points (which equates to roughly 70% of total points, though this does fluctuate slightly from year to year) will earn you a score of 5.
Remember, the AP Calculus AB exam is divided into multiple-choice and free-response sections. As well, AP exams are not only assessing your raw knowledge of material. They're also looking at application, analysis, and synthesis skills, so that's something to keep in mind.
These percentages are just estimates and can vary slightly from year to year, as the College Board uses a statistical process called equating to account for variations in exam difficulty. But generally speaking, if you’re able to correctly answer a substantial majority of the questions, you'll be in a good position to potentially earn that top score of 5.
Best of luck in your AP studies!
