Community Service Suggestions for High Schoolers?

I'm trying to build out my resume and get more involved in the community. Does anyone have some interesting examples or ideas for volunteer work or community service that is doable for a high schooler?

With your aim to get more involved in your community, there are numerous possibilities for you to consider. It's important to remember that community service is best done in an area you are passionate about. It not only makes the work more fulfilling, but it also shines through when colleges see a consistent theme in your volunteering.

1. Local Libraries or Museums: You can inquire at your local library or community museum about volunteering opportunities. They often need help with organizing events, sorting books, or even some administrative tasks.

2. Youth Mentoring: Consider becoming a mentor for a younger student. This can be in an academic setting, physical activities, arts, or any other field you excel in.

3. Animal Shelters: If you love animals, local animal shelters always need an extra pair of hands. Cleaning cages, feeding the animals and providing general care is usually what they require.

4. Environmental Causes: If you're passionate about the environment, consider volunteering in cleanup drives, community gardens, or environmental advocacy groups.

5. Hospital or Nursing Home Volunteering: Many hospitals and nursing homes look for volunteers to spend time with the residents or assist with various activities.

6. Food Banks: Especially during these times, food banks really value volunteer support in collecting, organizing, and distributing food.

7. Local Nonprofits: There are typically many local nonprofits that may coincide with your interests. These may range from homelessness to arts education, all of which may appreciate volunteers.

Remember, the quality of your involvement is more important than the quantity. So pick something you genuinely care about. Not only will it feel less like work, but your authentic interest will be evident to others, including future colleges.
