Need advice on ranking for NYC high schools

So, I live in NYC and I'm looking into high schools here. I've seen so many lists ranking the 'top ten' high schools in NYC. What factors generally go into these rankings? Academics, extracurriculars, college acceptance rates?

Rankings of high schools usually consider a variety of factors. Academic performance is often a key measure, which can include things like average GPA, standardized test scores, course offerings, and often graduation rates. This is typically given a lot of weight because it directly reflects the school's curriculum and the students' academic achievements.

Schools' college preparation efforts can be another consideration. This might take into account post-secondary enrollment rates, along with data about how many students continue onto four-year colleges, and how well students are prepared for the rigors of college work.

Extracurricular activities are often valued too. This can show whether a school provides a rich, well-rounded education. Quality and diversity of extracurricular programs can indicate whether students have opportunities to explore different interests, or to further develop their existing passions.

The school environment can also be taken into account. This can manifest as factors like student-teacher ratios, diversity scores, and parent/student surveys about school culture and overall satisfaction.

Finally, college acceptance rates are often considered, as they can be seen as data points reflecting a school's overall quality of education and ability to prepare students for their next academic steps.

Remember that while rankings can be helpful, they may not always reflect what is most important for your personal academic and extracurricular interests. Personalizing your school search based on your unique needs and goals is key.
