Decoding the Toughest Undergraduate Degree

I’m not afraid of a little hard work, but just for kicks, what are commonly considered the toughest undergraduate degrees out there, and why? Is it the course content, the workload, the competition, or something else entirely?

The perception of which undergraduate degrees are the toughest can vary based on individual strengths and interests. That being said, some programs are historically recognized for their rigor due to the complexity of the subject material and the intensity of the workload. Here are some of them:

1. Engineering: Degrees in engineering (like civil, mechanical, or petroleum engineering) are often considered among the toughest due to the extent of their respective mathematical and technical content. They often involve a lot of practical work and projects, lowering the bandwidth you have for other activities or courses.

2. Physical Sciences: Programs such as physics and chemistry can also be very rigorous, again due to the intense amount of complex math and abstract concepts involved.

3. Medicine or Pre-Med Track: Admittedly, "pre-med" isn't itself a major, but the course load and requirements for students planning to go to medical school can be very intense. The prerequisites, including classes in biology, chemistry, physics, and math, are notoriously difficult and workload-heavy.

4. Architecture: While it might surprise some, an architecture degree is often rated as being tough due to its combination of complex design work and substantial mathematical content. Add to that a large amount of project-based work that can drain time and energy.

5. Computer Science: The profound understanding of programming, algorithms, and computer functionality required for a computer science degree can be quite challenging.
