Are there any prestigious high school writing competitions out there?

Hey everyone! I'm really into writing and I think I'm pretty good at it (teachers said so too, not just self-proclaimed). Does anyone know about some reputable high school writing competitions I could enter? Bonus points if they're recognized by colleges in their admissions process!

Certainly, upping your game in writing through competitions can be a great way to demonstrate skills to colleges. There are several competitions that are recognized and valued in college admissions.

1. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have a long history and are among the most prestigious. They host a multitude of categories, including short story, flash fiction, poetry, and more. You could earn recognition at the regional or even national level!

2. Another step up is the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award by The Poetry Society. It's open to writers aged 11-17). This competition has an impressive international reputation.

3. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) runs the Achievement Awards in Writing for 11th-grade students. Schools can nominate students for this award, and it's seen as an endorsement of writing ability from a scholarly organization.

4. If you are into journalism, consider applying for the Quill and Scroll International Writing, Photo, and Multimedia Contest, organized by the International Honor Society for High School Journalists.

5. For students with interest in politics or social issues, the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest asks participants to write an essay on political courage by a U.S. elected official.

6. The YoungArts’s national arts competition offers opportunities in the literary, performing, visual, and design arts categories.

Remember, even if you aren't successful in these competitions, the practice of creating and submitting work is valuable. It can act as a great learning experience, and the pieces you create can be used for things like college supplemental essays or as part of a writing portfolio. Happy writing!
