Chance of Admission for Out-of-State at University of Virginia?

I'm an out of state student eyeing the University of Virginia. I'm aware that public universities prefer in-state students. Anyone has statistics or personal experiences concerning out of state admissions rate at UVA?

While it's true that public universities like the University of Virginia (UVA) often have a preference for in-state students, out-of-state applicants are certainly not out of the picture. For the class of 2024, approximately 67% of the admitted students were from Virginia, which means about 33% were out-of-state or international students.

However, the statistics also reveal a higher admission rate for in-state students. In 2024, the admission rate for in-state students was about 25% while for out-of-state students, it was around 13%. But this should not discourage you from applying if you believe UVA is a good fit for you. Admission rates are influenced by a variety of factors, and it's the overall strength of your application that ultimately matters—not just where you're from.

Submitting a carefully crafted application that showcases your academic strengths, extracurricular involvement, and personal qualities can increase your chances of being admitted. Stay focused on the things within your control: your grades, test scores (if applicable), essays, and extracurricular activities.

Remember, while statistics provide a general overview, they don't determine an individual applicant's chances. Every application is reviewed holistically, and factors such as your essays, course rigor, and extracurricular involvement play crucial roles in admission decisions.
