Fly-in Programs for Juniors?

I'm currently a junior and I heard about these 'fly-in' programs that some colleges offer for high schoolers. How do these work, and how do you get into them? Are they something you apply for, and if so, what are they typically looking for in applicants?

Fly-in programs are opportunities provided by colleges for high school students to visit their campus, usually for a few days, so that students can get a feel for the college environment and culture. The college typically covers all or most travel costs, including flights, accommodation, and meals, hence the term "fly-in".

These programs are particularly popular among selective colleges who use them to attract high-performing students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, low-income students, or students from underrepresented backgrounds. However, any interested student is usually free to apply.

In terms of the application process, it generally involves filling out an application form where you provide your personal details, academic standings (GPA, test scores, etc.), high school course load, and extracurricular activities. Many programs also require essay responses or short answers to prompts. While the specifics will vary from school to school, they are generally looking for students who have strong academic potential, demonstrate leadership qualities, and have a clear interest in their school.

The timeline, too, is not strictly uniform across all institutions. However, most programs accept applications during the summer prior to your senior year and the programs themselves usually take place in the fall of your senior year.

I would advise you to start by making a list of universities that interest you and then check if they offer fly-in programs. The application process can be competitive, so it's good to start early and have all your materials ready. Remember, being part of a fly-in program is not only a great way to see the school firsthand but can demonstrate your interest in that particular college which can aid in your actual college application later on.
