Hi everyone! I'm really into writing and I'm considering majoring in creative writing. Does anyone know of colleges known for having a great creative writing program? I'm looking for places where I can really develop my skills and possibly meet some inspiring faculty.
Absolutely, creative writing is a wonderful major and there are several colleges that are known for strong programs in this field.
Among the top for creative writing are Johns Hopkins University, University of Iowa, and Middlebury College. Johns Hopkins has the Writing Seminars major which has a stellar reputation and has produced many successful authors over the years. University of Iowa's creative writing program is part of its English department but it's best known for its Iowa Writers' Workshop, which many consider the best MFA program in the country. Middlebury College also boasts a strong creative writing program, offering a major in English and American Literatures with a Creative Writing concentration.
On the west coast, University of California, Irvine offers a unique emphasis on the critical and analytical study of literature along with a minor or emphasis in creative writing which graduates have found very valuable.
Looking into smaller colleges, Kenyon College and Oberlin College are fantastic liberal arts schools with strong creative writing programs. As small schools, they offer the benefit of smaller, more personal classes and close interaction with faculty.
Keep in mind that the best program for you depends on your own personal style and needs as a writer. You might want to consider the faculty at these schools, the courses available, and the opportunity to get your work published in a school literary magazine or journal.
Good luck in your search! Meeting inspiring faculty and fellow students can be one of the best parts of studying creative writing at the college level.
